Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority was founded on Sunday November 12th, 1922. Founded on the campus of Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana. Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority is the only National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) sorority among three NPHC Greek letter organizations founded on a predominately white campus.
Sigma Gamma Rho's elite founders were seven young school teachers: Mary Lou Little, Dorothy Whiteside, Vivian Marbury, Nannie Johnson, Hattie Redford, Bessie Martin and Cubena McClure. They took the finest ideals of scholastic achievement, dedication to the community, self improvement and the sheer integrity of true sisterhood and embodied it in Sigma Gamma Rho.
Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority's aim is to enhance the quality of life within the community. Public service, leadership development and education of youth are the hallmarks of the organizations programs and activities. Sigma Gamma Rho addresses concerns that impact society educationally, civically and economically.
